How to paint your walls white without being boring

The world of interior design has its controversies, and white walls are one of them. Some people like how white walls can provide a room with a crisp, clean look. However, other people consider white walls to be dull and boring. White walls are versatile enough to incorporate well into many different design styles that otherwise do not seem to have much to do with one another. For example, they work equally well in a minimalist modern design as a cozy country cottage.

Generally speaking, white is a neutral colour, which means that it can work in any space and go with any colour. However, white comes in many different shades, some that are warmer and some that are cooler, while the colour itself remains neutral. Cooler shades make a room feel more large and open, while warmer tones make a room feel smaller and cozier. The effect you would like to create informs the shade of white you should choose for the walls.

Paints come in different finishes, which also contribute to the effect that they have on a room. Also referred to as sheen, the finish refers to how much light the paint reflects after it dries on the wall. High-gloss paints reflect the most light, while flat or matte paints reflect almost none. There is a range of finishes between these two. Arranged from more reflective to less reflective, they are:

  • Semi-gloss
  • Satin
  • Eggshell
